Short Description
Diese kleine Web-App erzeugt durch Spiegelung von Bildern Symmetrien, in denen manchmal interessante Strukturen zu erkennen sind. Die Spiegelung erfolgt anhand einer vertikalen Spiegelachse, die mittels des Schiebereglers am oberen Bildrand verschoben werden kann.
This small web app creates symmetries by mirroring images, in which interesting structures can sometimes be recognized. The mirroring is done using a vertical mirror axis, which can be moved using the slider at the top of the image.

Nach Installation auf Handy oder Tablet stehen weitere Funktionen und mehr Display-Platz zur Verfügung. Die Installation der App erfolgt entweder über das App-Menü (A) oder über das Menü des Browsers (B). Im Folgenden werden beide Möglichkeiten gezeigt:

Das zu spiegelnde Bild kann auf folgende Weise geöffnet werden:
The image to be mirrored can be opened as follows:
- Menüpunkt Image: Ein Bild vom Gerät wählen (z.B. von der Festplatte des Computers oder der SD-Karte bzw. dem internen Speicher des Handys oder Tablets).
- Image menu item: Select an image from the device (e.g. from the computer's hard drive or the SD card or the internal memory of the mobile phone or tablet).
- Teilen eines Bildes aus einer anderen App heraus an Image Mirror, z.B. aus der Galerie-App des Handys. Dazu muss die Web-App wie oben beschrieben auf dem Gerät installiert sein. So können auch Bilder von Webseiten in Image Mirror geöffnet werden: Etwas länger auf das Bild drücken und "Bild teilen" wählen (die genaue Bezeichnung dieser Funktionen hängt vom verwendeten Web-Browser ab).
- Share an image to Image Mirror from another app, such as your phone's gallery app. The web app must be installed on your device as described above. This way, images from websites can also be opened in Image Mirror: Press and hold the image and select "Share Image" (the exact name of this function depends on the web browser you're using).
Nachdem das Bild in Image Mirror geöffnet ist, kann die Spiegelachse mittels des Schiebereglers am oberen Bildrand verschoben werden.

Über den Menüpunkt Mirror kann gewählt werden, zu welcher Seite des Bildes die Spiegelfläche zeigt, also also welcher Teil des Bildes gespiegelt wird.
Using the Mirror menu item, you can select which side of the image the mirror surface points to, i.e. which part of the image is mirrored.
- Left to Right: Den linken Bildteil nach rechts spiegeln.
- Left to Right: Mirror the left part of the image to the right.
- Right to Left: Den rechten Bildteil nach links spiegeln.
- Right to Left: Mirror the right part of the image to the left.
Falls das Bild größer ist als der zur Verfügung stehende Platz auf dem Bildschirm bzw. Display, kann es mit Hilfe der Scrollbalken oder (auf Geräten mit Touch-Display) mit dem Finger verschoben werden.
If the image is larger than the available space on the screen or display, it can be moved using the scroll bars or (on devices with a touch display) with your finger.
Um das Bild ohne Scrollen komplett anzuzeigen, kann über den Menüpunkt Fit angegeben werden, wie es in den sichtbaren Bereich des Bildschirms bzw. Displays eingepasst werden soll:
To display the entire image without scrolling, you can use the Fit menu item to specify how it should be fitted into the visible area of the screen or display:
- Width: Das Bild wird auf die maximale Breite des Displays verkleinert.
- Width: The image is shrinked to the maximum width of the display.
- Height: Das Bild wird auf die maximale Höhe des Displays verkleinert.
- Height: The image is shrinked to the maximum height of the display.
Hat man eine schöne Spiegelung entdeckt, kann man das Ergebnis-Bild über den Menüpunkt Result speichern oder "teilen" (weiterleiten):
Once you have discovered a nice mirroring, you can save or share the resulting image using the Result menu item:
- Download: Das Ergebnis-Bild als PNG-Datei auf dem Gerät (Festplatte, SD-Karte, ...) speichern.
- Download: Save the resulting image as a PNG file on the device (hard drive, SD card, ...).
- Share: Weiterleiten ("Teilen") des Ergebnis-Bildes an andere Apps oder an Kontakte.
- Share: Share the resulting image with other apps or contacts.
Auf Desktop-Browsern kann man darüberhinaus nach Rechtsklick auf das Bild auch die Funktionen des Browser-Kontextmenüs nutzen wie z.B.;

- Bild kopieren: Das Ergebnis-Bild in die Zwischenablage kopieren.
- Copy image: Copy the resulting image to the clipboard.

Die Idee zu dieser App geht auf eine Spielerei von vor über 20 Jahren zurück: Im Jahr 2004 postete einmal jemand in einer Mailingliste ein Infrarot-Foto eines Baumes, auf dem durch Spiegelung an der Mittelachse plötzlich ein etwas unheimlich aussehendes "Wesen" sichtbar wurde:
The idea for this app goes back to a gimmick from over 20 years ago: In 2004, someone posted an infrared photo of a tree in a mailing list, in which a mirroring at the central axis suddenly revealed a somewhat eerie-looking "creature":
Aufgrund der großen "Ohren" glaubte er in dem "Wesen" den Keltenfürst aus Sandstein zu erkennen, der bei ihm ganz in der Nähe gefunden worden war, und dessen Hände nun auf eine "Grabkerze" mit dem Wort "TOT" deuteten:

So weit, so gruselig...👻 Ich machte dann einen eigenen Versuch mit einem Bild von einer Winterlandschaft, das ich im Jahr zuvor mal irgendwo gefunden und abgespeichert hatte:

Wow! Plötzlich sieht man jede Menge Figuren! Seht Ihr im unteren Drittel des Baumes den Mann mit dem Rauschebart stehen? Er trägt einen Mantel mit weiten Ärmeln; seine Arme hält er seitlich vom Körper abgewinkelt. Sogar die Augen und die Nase sind deutlich zu erkennen. Über seinem Kopf ist ein dreieckiges "Gebilde" zu sehen, dessen Spitze nach oben zeigt. Und oberhalb des Mannes sind sogar noch weitere "eulenartige Wesen" zu sehen.
Wow! Suddenly, you see a whole bunch of figures! Do you see the man with the bushy beard standing in the lower third of the tree? He's wearing a coat with wide sleeves; he holds his arms at his sides. Even his eyes and nose are clearly visible. Above his head, you can see a triangular "structure" with its tip pointing upwards. And above the man, you can even see other "owl-like creatures."

Moment mal! Erinnert der "Schnee-Mann" nicht ein wenig an den Magier "Merlin" aus der keltischen Sage um König Artus?

Es sind eindeutig Übereinstimmungen vorhanden: Der Mantel mit den weiten Ärmeln und dem Muster darauf, der Rauschebart, der spitze Hut...
There are clear similarities: the coat with the wide sleeves and the pattern on it, the bushy beard, the pointed hat...
Ach ja, und hatte nicht Merlin (zumindest in der Disney-Version) auch eine Eule namens Archimedes?
Oh, and didn't Merlin (at least in the Disney version) also have an owl named Archimedes?

Conclusion
Das Phänomen mit den "Extras" auf gespiegelten Fotos ist in der Tat faszinierend, da man so etwas nicht erwarten würde. Offensichtlich hat unser optischer Wahrnehmungssinn die Eigenschaft, vor allem in symmetrischen Strukturen "Wesen" zu sehen. Denn wo sonst außer bei Lebewesen kommt in der Natur Symmetrie vor? – Noch interessanter wird es, wenn diese "Extras" dann auch noch sinnvolle Bezüge zu Bekanntem aufweisen...
The phenomenon of "extras" in mirrored photos is indeed fascinating, as one would never expect something like this. Apparently, our optical perception has the ability to see "creatures" primarily in symmetrical structures. After all, where else, apart from living beings, does symmetry occur in nature? – This becomes even more interesting when these "extras" also have meaningful connections to familiar things...
Und weil das so Spaß macht, habe ich nun – mehr als 20 Jahre später – eine kleine JavaScript-Anwendung geschrieben, mit der das Spiegeln und Zusammenfügen der Bildhteile wesentlich einfacher geht als manuell mittels eines Grafikprogramms...
And because it's so much fun, I've now – more than 20 years later – written a small JavaScript application that makes mirroring and merging the image parts much easier than doing it manually using a graphics program...
