EVPmaker Quickstart

A Step-By-Step Guide

Introduction

In order to record EVP it seems to be necessary to provide some kind of "raw material" which is used as a "carier" for the voices. Many experimenters use a radio set which is tuned to a foreign-language radio station, or to a mixture of several radio stations, as a raw material source. Important is only that the experimenter does not understand the language of the raw material. This acoustical raw material is then radiated into the room during the EVP recording and eventually re-recorded. The paranormal statements are contained in the recorded raw material and can be heard upon the following playback.

EVPmaker generates such an acoustical raw material by picking short pieces (segments) from an arbitrary sound recording by chance and playing them back immediately. This "chopping" results in a kind of audible "gibberish" which still contains the original frequency spectrum of the source material but no more intelligible information. Thus, it is suitable for EVP recordings.

This practical guide will show you step by step how you can proceed to record and playback EVP on your computer using the software EVPmaker. The following alternative procedures will be explained:

1. For providing the acoustical source material:

a) Recording a new WAV file.

b) Opening an already existing WAV file.

2. For carrying out an EVP recording:

a) Recording the raw material acoustically via a microphone connected to a cassette recorder.

b) Recording the raw material acoustically via a microphone connected to the computer running CoolEdit.

c) Recording the raw material digitally during an "EVP Session" (without microphone recording).

It depends on your preferences which of these alternatives you are going to use. I personally prefer 1 b in combination with 2 b, i.e. I'm using an already existing WAV file with a recording of some speech as source material, let EVPmaker chop this up and radiate it via the PC speakers into the room, and record it simultaneously via a microphone connected to the same computer using CoolEdit. This way the questions asked by the persons present together with the expected paranormal answers come onto the same recording which is then analyzed on this computer.
